Teenage Ghost

Brenda ran home from the school bus. It was finally Friday, the night of the sleepover. She burst through the front door and raced to the kitchen. She let out a huge sigh of relief when she saw her mother had indeed gone shopping, before she left for work. They were stocked with potato chips, vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, milk, popcorn, candy, and three types of sugar cereals. The cereals were the knock off brands, but you wouldn’t know it after it was in the bowl. Only the candy had a brand name, unless you call the store brand a brand name.
She was less embarrassed about it than before, because she knew Vi had no home and no food to eat at all most days. She was just happy to have this much food.
She rushed upstairs and showered and dressed in the only trendy outfit she owned. Almost all her other clothes were hand me downs from donation stores. Every year she was allowed to buy one new outfit. She had grown over the summer and couldn’t wear last year’s anymore. She played with her hair til it looked presentable, then looked over her room to make sure everything was in place.
    The doorbell rang.
Brenda rushed down the stairs, and opened the door without even looking to see who it was.
Vi stood smiling and holding up a boutique bag. “Guess what I got!” she hugged Brenda quickly and the two went inside.
Once inside the room Vi dumped the bag upside down on the bed. Hair extensions in a rainbow of colors and a mound of make up fell out.
“That must have cost a fortune!” Brenda gasped. “How did you afford it?”
“Don’t worry about it.” Vi waved her off. “Josh has a really good job, he just loaned it to me.”
Brenda was a little confused, “Josh? Your boyfriend?”
Vi smiled at her, “Yes. He’s my boyfriend. You got a problem with that?”
Brenda smiled back at her. “I never had a boyfriend.” she confessed.
“We’ll have to work on that.” Vi looked at the pile of stuff on the bed. “But first we have to make you look like you want a boyfriend.”, she rummaged through the makeup and pulled out some black eyeliner and mascara. With her other hand she pulled up some hot pink hair extensions. “So what first? Hair or makeup?” she asked.
