Teenage Ghost

Eighties music played in the background of Evan’s 1977 Firebird Formula. He was in the backseat with Vi making out. The black vinyl seat felt cool against his arm, and Vi felt warm against his lips.
He pulled back to regain his breath, he glanced into Vi’s endless dark eyes.
She pulled him back to her. Her soft skin felt so warm against his. Her tongue was so moist and stiff against his as they kissed. Her fingers ran through his hair, he felt her nails lightly touch his scalp.
It was in that instant Evan Sr realized he was dreaming. He pulled back and looked at Vi in mild confusion.
“Don’t wake up.” she quickly pleaded. “These past few days have been like heaven for me.”
Evan saw a quick flash and then he too remembered everything the two had been doing. The night he and Jeff spoke on the bleachers, after the Homecoming game. Evan looked down at his old feet, which Homecoming Game?
Vi narrowed her eyes and continued to force him to remember the past few days they spent together.
After Jeff left the stadium, Vi walked up from the bottom of the bleachers.
She was so enticing in her ripped fishnet and tight off the shoulder half shirt. The two argued, as they always had, over him hanging out with a goody two shoes nerd. Then after a few good jabs at his old best friend, Vi recanted. She used her cute pout and asked for his jacket because she was cold. Evan took it off and handed it to her, like he had done a million times before. Vi sat down next to him on the bleachers and snuggled in, Evan put his arm around her to make everything okay again.
The two watched the stars until they fell asleep under them. The next morning he took her to the donut shop in his car. Everything was perfect again. They spent the day ditching school at the mall, and now were making out in the dark parking lot. The mall had been closed for several hours.
Evan glanced into Vi’s eyes. It was as if time had never ended. Jeff had never died, it was all a bad dream. No time had passed at all between them. His lips pressed against hers.
Vi embraced him as if she would never let him go.

Evan watched his Granddad sleeping soundly in his coma. “I wonder what he’s dreaming about in there.” he said to Jeff.
Jeff looked at Evan Jr then at Evan Sr. “Probably his past.”
     “You think so?”
“Look at the smile on his face.” Jeff pointed out a smile that was slowly creeping on his Grandfather’s face.
Suddenly the heart monitor flat lined, Jeff and Evan jumped backwards in fear. Nurses rushed into the room and began to try to resuscitate him. Evan and Jeff ran to a corner of the room and tried to watch as a nurse was urgently pushing on them to leave.
For a split second Evan Sr awoke and with crystal clarity saw Jeff standing beside Evan. As he quickly started to relapse back into unconsciousness he couldn’t be sure if he wasn’t having an out of body experience. Vi talked so much about wanting to have one, maybe that’s what it was he experienced. He had seen himself and Jeff standing there.
