Teenage Ghost

A week had passed since Jeff had moved into the tree house. He saw first hand the somber mood around his friend’s house. No one spoke a single word or even bothered to look up past what they were doing. It was like someone had taken the life out of them.
Jeff wanted to do something about it, but what could he do? These people were not on medication. He tried several times to talk to Evan’s mother. Only one time did she give a sad smile, the whole time all he could see was pain in her watering eyes.
Jeff looked out the window of the tree house and sighed deeply. “Did you even know how much love there is in this family for you when you went, Evan? You broke every heart when you left here, every will is broken and gone. You weren’t like that in real life, you would never do to these people what this has done.” Jeff thought about his long time friend.
“If you knew how much they were suffering now, you’d come back wanting to console them. They are miserable without you, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to change.” He looked up at the stars. “If you’re up there, and you can hear me. Help me out. Something has be done. Talk to somebody up there, there has to be someone up there who can help.”
Jeff looked at the house again. “Or someone who knows something. Anything.” he glanced back at the stars again. “This can’t go on, Evan. Not like this.”
There was no mystical reply to Jeff’s plea, no stars fell to wish upon either. He sat in the moonlight and watched the house in silence.
All he could do was feel helpless, over the very people he swore to protect.

Josh woke in his room around noon, bright light streamed in through the light blue curtains. His brain felt strange. It was itchy, throbbing, and burned at the same time. He was quickly overcome by annoyance. He was annoyed at the light for waking him, annoyed at the curtains for not being dark enough to stop the light from coming in.
He hated the sun today. No, he hated the sun from this day on!
Josh jumped out of bed and grabbed his comforter off the foot of the bed. He stuffed it in the curtain rod til the sun was completely blocked from his room.
It was as dark as night.
Josh felt the pain start to subside. His brain began to relax, the throbbing ceased. His annoyance of everything began to fade into the darkness that surrounded him.
Josh laid back down on his bed, realizing he hadn’t even removed his shoes the night before. He shrugged to himself and laid there staring into the darkness. A strange peace began to overcome him, as he fell back asleep.
