Teenage Ghost

Chapter Two

Evan had been moping since his grandfather died, it had been three weeks. He went to school, went to class, and spoke to no one. He did not look up from his feet when he scuffled down the hallway. His eyes always looked swollen and red as if he had just been crying.
Jeff watched him many times from the tree house. A few times he had knocked on the door, but he was always refused. Jeff was unsure if it was time for him to disappear too. He could always watch Evan without him knowing. It took less effort to be unseen. His heart was heavy for his friend, but there was nothing he could do but stand in the background and watch.
Evan walked out into the backyard and looked up at the tree house and saw Jeff through the window. He thought about going back inside, but something inside him told him he had been alone enough. He climbed into the tree house and sat across from Jeff.
The two sat in silence, and Jeff could see that all Evan wanted to do was cry. “It’s alright.” Jeff told him. “I cried too when my granddad died.”
Evan’s tears flowed silently down his cheek. The two sat in silence as the sun began to fall out of the sky.
Crickets were beginning to chirp within the yard below. All that was left of Evan’s tears were dried marks on his cheeks.
“I wasn’t sure I was your friend anymore.” Jeff broke the silence.
“You’re always my friend.” Evan spoke softly, but didn’t look up.
“Summer break is in three weeks.” Jeff looked at Evan closely, “Are you doing anything?”
Evan looked at Jeff, “You mean, We?”
“Alright, you and me, are we doing anything this summer?”
Evan drew in a deep breath and looked at his sneakers. “I hadn’t thought about it. But.”, he looked over his shoulder out of the window towards the house. “I don’t want to stay here all summer. How about your place?” he looked back at Jeff.
“My mom wont allow it.” Jeff frowned. “We can always go camping.”
Evan looked at Jeff remembering their last outing in the woods.
Jeff watched Evan grimacing. “We’ll figure it out.”
Evan’s mother turned on the outside light, the signal dinner was on the table.
“Stay for dinner.” Evan offered as he opened the trap door.
“Naw, I gotta get home.” Jeff climbed down after then waved goodbye to his friend.
Jeff spent the night walking he neighborhood looking for an abandoned house. He was going to need a summer home.
