Teenage Ghost

“I can’t believe this is the last weekend before school starts.” Evan leaned over the second story railing to watch the people walking on the first floor.
Jeff kept his eyes open as he scanned the mall for Vi.
“Things are going to be different this year.” Evan said. “I can feel it.”, he glanced up across the mall and saw a familiar face.
He felt time slow down to a crawl, and all the muffled noises of the mall faded into absolute silence. Vi walked arm in arm with a dark haired goth boy. She tossed her hair lightly to the right when her eyes met Evan’s. Then she let the glance fall as if boredom had set in, and snuggled in closer to her beau.
    Evan said quickly, “There’s Vi.”
    Jeff whirled around quickly.
Evan felt a gust of ice cold air from the blur of movement.
Jeff narrowed his eyes as he watched the couple lean against the entrance to the coffee shop.
Vi pushed the boy against the wall and began to kiss him. She seemed to be keeping her eye on a small display containing several boxes of tea. The cardboard display was on the other end of the entrance. Soon a woman walked near the coffee shop, she was texting on her phone and not looking where she was going.
Suddenly as the woman neared the display she stumbled to her left. She tried to catch her balance and in doing so knocked the display over. Small boxes of teas scattered on the floor and out into the mall hallway.
A teenage girl with a tan complexion walked out to fix the display. She had on make up and gold piercings. Her magenta hair was pulled back in a neat ponytail. The rings on her fingers were gold, and gold with gems. They caught the light as she picked up the boxes and set them back on the display in order.
After she was done she walked over to Vi, and they seemed to have a normal conversation. Then the girl went back inside the coffee shop.
Not too long after that a couple walked past. As soon as they reached the cardboard display, they too had a mysterious stumble. The man fell into the display knocking it to the ground. Several boxes of tea were crushed underneath him as he fell.
Again the tan teenage girl walked out and tidied up the display. She waved to Vi and then walked back into the coffee shop.
This continued for an hour, with various people falling into the display or knocking it over in some manner.
Finally the teenage girl was in tears as she straightened the display and put back the teas. Her shoulders slumped and she avoided Vi’s eye contact as she walked back into work.
Then Evan and Jeff watched as Vi and her new boyfriend snickered and laughed after the girl had gone in the back out of earshot.
Evan looked at Jeff, “I feel sick. I can’t believe I fell for her.”
“Lets just get out of here.” Jeff said as he watched Vi go back to kissing the goth boy. “She’s only trying to make you jealous anyway.”
