Teenage Ghost

They reached the intensive care unit and walked past several people til they reached an old woman in her nineties. She laid there breathing on her own, but in a deep sleep unable to awake.
“Gramma, this is a friend of mine.” Vi introduced Evan to the unconscious old woman. “His name is…” Vi looked over at Evan expectantly.
“Evan.” Evan stepped up on cue. “You have a really lovely grand daughter, you know. It’s nice that she still cares enough to come down here and see to you after all this time. A lot of kids these days, they just don’t do that anymore.” He glanced over at Vi and gave her a reassuring smile.
     Vi smiled back.
“Maybe it would be ok for you to meet my grandpa after all. I mean it’s just for a minute.”
“Yes!” Vi jumped up and down a little in a child like manner, and smiled sweetly.
Evan smiled at making her so happy, “Come on.”
They walked into the entrance of Evan Sr’s room.
Evan’s mom turned around to see the dark troubled looking girl holding hands with her son, she felt a coldness fill the room as they entered together.
Evan Jr pushed in between his mom and dad, “Grandpa I have someone I want you to meet, her grandmom is here in intensive care in a coma. We’ve just been up there visiting, she comes everyday to see her.” He pulled Vi in closer so she could see his Grandfather, and his Grandfather could see her.
Vi bit her bottom lip lightly and smiled sweetly at Evan Sr.
He began to mumble incoherently under his breath as he became increasingly agitated.
The Evans family quickly pulled the two teens away from Evan Sr. A nurse was called into the room as the two were ushered out into the hallway.
“He must have gotten agitated over a stranger being in the room.” Evan’s dad explained to the nurse and looked accusingly at Vi and Evan who stood in the hallway.
“It’s not your fault.” Evan said to Vi quickly
Vi had a look of fear and regret on her face. “What if it is? What if meeting a stranger set him off on some sort of shock? I never should have come!” her tears began to well up in her dark eyes. “Every time I think I like someone, I find some way to royally screw it up!” She ran down the hallway and out of sight.
Evan wanted to rush after her, but his mother gave him a disapproving look.
“I don’t even have a way to call her!” he pleaded with his unwavering mother.
“She comes here everyday.” His mother reminded him. “I’m sure you’ll see her again.”
Evan sighed with defeat and watched the end of the hallway til it was time to go home. He’d hoped she would calm down and come back to talk to him, but Vi didn’t return.
