Vampires

     “911. What is your..”
“I broke into this house and now the woman here is trying to…” Gurgling noises began and the thud sound of the phone falling to floor.
     “Sir…Sir…” The operator continued.
“Send a coroner and the police.” a female voice could now be heard.
     “We can’t trace your location.”
“Then I’ll have to take care of it myself.”
“M’am, was the suspect armed when you attacked him?”
“Hey!” the woman yelled foul. “The guy breaks into my house. I’ve already been raped once before. My house has already been broken into and robbers tried to get into my locked bedroom. While I was sleeping! I’m a thin female, in the house alone. I have learned. I have to protect myself, before anything happens. So don’t you try to blame this on me. I’m where I belong. I’m in my house. I keep to myself, I don’t bother anyone. I’m mindful of the law. He broke in here, I didn’t break into his place.”
The phone conversation played in the background as the news cameras panned over the almost severed head of the suspect.
“Look at all that blood.” Augustus murmured.
     “What a waste.” Arturo agreed.
“We’re in the wrong place.” Jeremiah watched. “We need to move in where they break in.”
“Each of us should get a house in the same neighborhood. People will be moving out due to crime. Lots of free houses.” Augustus set out his orders.
“And Lots of free food.” Utheus concluded.
“Til the well runs dry.” Augustus walked out of the room.
“There’s no sport in dining in all the time.” Jessica warned. “You dull our senses and lull us into a false sense of security. When will we hunt again.”
“You want to hunt? Go join Elizabeth then and get out of my sight.” August snapped.
     Utheus watched Augustus closely.
“Trying to find my blind spot, Utheus?” Augustus turned around. “There’s not a plot hatched in your head that I can’t outmaneuver. Lest you forget who created you….and why. You want to make sport and revelry? Fine. Go. You are free to do as you wish. But consider this, you will never be in control of this brood. And when you cross us, I will crush you like a dishonorable soldier. You wish Jeremiah and the others would follow you? Follow you and Elizabeth to death? You have nothing but time to wait for. Cause a great uprising and it will be just as I have shown you. The Believers will rise to protect mankind. You have plenty to eat, and no resistance. Why do you look for trouble and strife in the land of plenty?”
“Because I grow bored.” Utheus sat back down and seemed to pout.
“It’s really that easy, Utheus.” Jessica urged. “No one will stop anyone from joining Elizabeth.”
“Everyone knows there’s safety in numbers.” Jeremiah complained as he stood up. “We all know. As a group of thirteen we stand stronger than a group of four or even six. We either all do it, or we run the risk of living without protection.”
“Elizabeth always was reckless.” Augustus warned the others. “Even with my guidance, how many times did we have to rescue her over the millennia? I grow weary of watching her, of risking this brood and our safety for the sake of one. A fact you know all to well Utheus, which I suspect is why you are still here. So if this conversation is finished….”
     “It is.” Utheus barked.
