Vampires

Augustus straightened the paper out, there was a huge scandal over some actresses apparent suicide.  It had occupied the media for over a month now.  “Time marches forward, but mankind never evolves with it.” he turned the page.

“You are no better.” Jeremiah tossed back from across the sparsely furnished apartment.  “Have you evolved beyond your makings?  It’s been a long time since Caesar Augustus walked the streets, how well faired ye in all of Time?”
“You are not my conscience.  You are not even Aware enough to have a conscience.” Augustus didn’t even look up from his reading.
Tlantli walked into the room, his South American bronze skin made him look more alive than the others.  He hid his eyes behind dark sunglasses at all times.  No one ever guessed he was one of the walking undead.
When Tlantli a child he witnessed his sisters sacrifice.  It was the way of the Aztecs.  Her life was given for the insurance of a bountiful harvest.     At the sacrificial ceremony was a man, a strange man no one had ever seen before.   He beguiled and bewitched all who came into contact with him.  Tlantli was only seven at the time, all he could remember about the time was the pride he and his family had felt over his sister’s “Choosing”.  How beautiful she was dressed in the finest the village had to offer.  How brave and confident she was as she walked to the alter.  She was a great gift, beautiful and talented with herbs.  Everything she planted grew to fruition and flourished.  That year the harvest was overflowing.
When he became the age of his sister he asked if he could be considered for sacrifice.  The elders  held counsel over it, but the strange man was again there.  It was the strange man who brought back the negative decision, and also a compromise.
Instead of shedding his blood, maybe he would be more willing to take the blood.  A different sort of sacrifice.  One the would ensure the Aztec traditions were preserved for all eternity.  A sacrifice for all of his people, that would require him to live for eternity.
“We are the walking histories of our time, it is not ours to Evolve.” Tlantli remarked as he sat on the couch next to Augustus.
