Original X-roads-2003

The Emperor started in a deep, slow laugh, first it was soft but soon escalated to a loud rumbling.
I turned my glare to him, what’s he find so funny?
“General,” he started to question Sertoff, “Do you think Death of all things will conform your companion?”
Sertoff sheathed his sword and regained his soldier stance.
“Come forward, child.” he addressed me.
I walked up several of the steps that led to the platform the throne sat on.
He looked at me for several minutes before speaking again, “Yes.” he whispered as if he had a revelation. He leaned forward in his throne and interlocked his fingers in front of himself. “It had been years since this court has been graced by the presence of a Real woman.” he settled back again. His deep purple eyes watched me closely as he uttered his next words, “We have forgotten that they truly are the fairer and weaker of the sexes. The battlefield holds no place for them, they will remain here under my, personal supervision. I will see they are, well protected from the savages of war.”
I gritted my teeth, I felt the soldiers coming up behind me. It’s true I could easily take off his head right now for his comments, but that would be foolish on my part. “And who will protect us from this old savage?” I retorted. “Your words are as little as your mind.” I seethed at him.
Again the Emperor laughed, then he turned to his troops. “Take this, WOMAN, to the dungeon.” He glanced at me, “We will see whose spirit breaks first, mine or yours.”
I felt them walk behind me, a sharp spear sat in the middle of my back.
“Relieve her of her weapons.” he ordered.
The soldiers reached over and took away my sword and dagger.
The Emperor smiled, “I trust you will find my dungeon accommodating.”
I gritted my teeth and reluctantly turned, walking out with two soldiers in front and two in back.
Sertoff grinned slightly at me as I passed him.
