Lottery 1

Lucy Stymes stood in shock as droplets of blood splattered on her. She glanced at the ticket in her hand and raced off in a panic. She ran back to her studio apartment and locked the door. She tossed the ticket with her purse on her opened futon, then ran to the shower.
Her phone rang incessantly as she watched the red go down the drain.
Her body was shaking, she felt so numb and cold at the same time. The image flashed again and again in her mind. Finally the water began to warm her skin, she lathered off the insane turn of events.
After she had poured herself a cup of coffee she sat at the computer pulling up the local news. There was the report, they would be looking for her. She was the unnamed woman who fled the scene.
The phone again began screaming from the wall.
Her boss screamed at her about being late…again. She could find another job.
Lucy didn’t care so much about the job, it was easy enough to get another. One waitress is as good as any other.
By mid afternoon Lucy felt more normal, she glanced again at the news site for updates. Then noticed the winning lottery numbers on the side. She distinctly remembered there was one winning ticket for all that money. Then she remembered she was handed a ticket.
The world began to feel surreal to Lucy. She walked over and picked up the ticket, glancing at the monitor… the numbers matched.
Dread began to grip Lucy as she glanced at the ticket.
“What winnings is this curse?” she whispered as the ticket fell from her hands to the carpet.
Should she cash it? Was someone looking for that guy? Why did he shoot himself when he had the winning ticket? Did he steal the ticket from someone else?
She bent down and picked up the paper. Maybe it was a fake.
She sat down at her computer and scoured the news for anything related to the lottery.
She had 14 days to claim the ticket.
She had 14 days to find out what was going on.
