Mysteries on the Side

Mr. Smith cut him off quickly, “And I would not go around with a bumbling pack of wannabe sleuths expecting to find any sort of truth. If there is any to be had out there.” He took a step closer to Gabriel, “I know what this is about. It’s about the two mysterious deaths isn’t it? Well I assure I had nothing to do with either one of those.”
Mr. Smith the let out a scoffing breath of air and took a step away from his accuser. “But that isn’t going to stop any of you. You’re all going to be asking questions.” he then glanced up at Gabriel in a way that sent a strange shock to his system.
John Smith looked Gabriel dead in the eye, and said with the utmost respect, “As it should be, and well done. Because your service to the country is never done.” he then clicked his rear heels together and saluted crisply before heading off back to his room.
Gabriel watched him walk off, he never expected a confession he did expect the deflection. The only way to catch Mr. Smith in anything is going to be twenty four hour surveillance. Gabriel shook his head, let’s face it in the Royal Army he would have been able to do this without a doubt. The STOA is a completely different matter. Gertrude and Dorthy, if she wasn’t injured, would be a big help.
The problem was Time. Time was the real enemy, he could strike again at any moment. What would John Smith have against the victims? What did they have in common? Could he possibly bribe Serina to have a quick poke around in Mr. Smith’s flat? No though, she just started working here, and if she was found out that would be her job. Also it would not reflect very well on him, and it might even violate his terms of agreement for living here. Criminal Trespass, they call it here.
Any criminal activity at the Alpine is forbidden though, so if he could prove Smith guilty of murder perhaps rule breaking might be justified. Gabriel was too moral in the end to bribe anyone or sneak around. However he was too concerned for Esther and Pearl’s well being.
He did the one thing he knew would help, even if it was only to bring himself inner peace. He walked to the chapel, pulled out his trusty rosary, and took it to the only place it matters. Prayer to the Lord.
