in the hallway. I had to have some Meadow side nurses come over and sedate her, because I could not deescalate the situation. Then Mr. Macleve’s alarm goes off, he’s flat-lined. So in the midst of Miss Odell’s confusion, I rush in there.” He paused and looked at both of us. “Now mind you the alarm just went off. His oxygen machine had been switched off, but the machine itself was still hot to the touch. So it had obviously just been switched off. When I reached down to check a pulse, he was cold.”
Carson shivered for a second as he relived the moment, then continued. “Rigor mortis cold. He’d been gone for a lot longer than that alarm went off.” Suspicion took over Carson’s face now, “The odd thing about all this, as if that wasn’t odd enough. There was a half drank cup of coffee on the overbed table. Mr. Macleve never drinks coffee or any other liquid after seven at night, because he doesn’t like to get out of bed.”
“Is it possible it was a remnant of breakfast?” Mrs. Izato inquired.
Carson looked at her as if she wasn’t listening at all, “There was nothing on that table when I started my shift and looked in on him. He was alive and reading that newspaper he was always on about, too political for me.”
Then his eyes lit up, “Another thing I noticed too, the blinds were all on the black out mode he liked, and the clock was blinking twelve like it needed to be reset.”
This tidbit sparked something deep inside Dorthy, under her breath almost she mused, “That’s interesting.”. Then asked, “Was it blinking when you started your shift?”
Carson thought back, “No it was correct, or I would have set it for him. The black out mode is always on though. Day shift nurses alway leave notes about the fight they have with him over those blinds.” Carson shrugged it off. “He was in a war, he served this country, far be it for me to take away what little comfort he has.”
“You’re always a good friend.” Dorthy reached over and patted his still clasped hands. “I’m sure he appreciated it, if anything else jumps out at you in the middle of the night. Keep me informed.” she motioned for me to take her back to the room.
“Thank you.” I said to Carson as we left.
He smiled and waved to us.
The next day I arrived just as Mrs. Izato was getting out of the shower. As I made my presence known, she lit up.
“You got here just in time! I need you to rub some more elbow grease on my shoulder. You know I slept all through the night last night. I can see now what the hype is. I can’t believe I didn’t need to pee all night!” She stood near the bathroom counter and waited as I put on my gloves.
I noticed her skin was slightly pink where I had put the cream before, “It looks like there’s a little skin discoloration from it.”
“How bad is it?” Dorthy reached in the drawer and pulled out a hand held mirror.
