Mysteries on the Side

Chapter Six

I helped Mrs. Izato into her wheelchair, because the day had been a very long one, and she wanted to go to the nurses station. I was concerned she was pushing herself too hard on trying to solve this mystery, if it was indeed even a mystery at all.
Carson looked into the rounded mirror hanging on the corner wall so the hallway could be seen with ease from the nurses station.
Pearl was scurrying down the hallway towards him at an unusually fast pace.
She passed Mrs. Izato and myself as we were leisurely strolling down the hall. I noticed she was carrying a walkie talkie, I had not seen one since the nineties. Why was she carrying that? How odd, but I think it’s possible she might be a bit eccentric. I leaned down to ask Dorthy, “Why is she carrying that walkie talkie”
Mrs. Izato just grunted in response, she had other things on her mind.
Carson said in a loud irritated voice, “Be careful Mz. Sachman. We wouldn’t another hip fracture.” He looked down at his paperwork on the desk as she passed by walking at more normal pace.
It was just as well he didn’t look up as Pearl was sticking her tongue out at him as she walked past to her post.
I bit my bottom lip to keep from laughing out loud.
As we reached the nurses station, Carson looked up at us and greeted us with a smile and a pleasant demeanor. “Good morning, Ladies. What can I help you with today?”
“We need to speak with you in private.” Dorthy explained.
“Step right into my office.” he turned the office door and swung it open for us to go in.
Once inside, behind closed doors, Dorthy began her questioning. “I’m sorry I have to ask you this, and I hope this does not put a strain on our friendship, nor a hardship on you.”
Carson set back in his chair and clasped his hands together. He knew what this was about, she wanted to know what Gertrude wanted to know.
Mrs. Izato felt his discomfort, “In fact if any answer could result in hardship for you, and you would rather not answer, that will be sufficient enough for me.”
He relaxed a little after hearing that and seemed more open to the conversation. “This is about Jeremy Macleve. You know something don’t you.”
Dorthy shook her head, “No. not yet. Tell me everything can, and even some of what you can’t if it will help.”
Carson nodded and leaned forward toward her. “You didn’t hear it from me. The night Jeremy Macleve died, I was on duty. Around ten thirty, maybe earlier Odell Martin is having a senior moment
