Mysteries on the Side

	The entire group collectively gasped.
Gertrude continued, “I take it then no one was aware. Patricia noted he never spoke of any medications or dialysis.” Gertrude brought her hand up to a folding close, the gems glinting off the lights. She seemed to be in deep thought and then looked back at the group, “I’m not sure. Poison maybe?”
Dorthy cleared her throat then began, “His daughter came up to collect his things, she broke down. I took the keys to hang on to them for her, til she’s ready, and then I went in. I scoured every single part of that apartment. There was nothing out of place.”
The man spoke up, “He was meticulous.”
“I think he had OCD.” white gloves mumbled in disinterest.
Dorthy and I both looked at her in reproach.
The man again took control of the group, “I think we should investigate John Smith. Find out who he is, who he likes, what he likes. Does he have any hobbies, family, what kind of car does he drive. He lives on the fifth floor, single occupancy units with no kitchenette or laundry. We need someone in that apartment, looking around. We need to know everything there is to know about John Smith.” He stood up from his chair and looked at every member individually as he stated, “We all have to do our part diligently. For Queen and Crown.”
“Or God and Country.” Dorthy pushed herself away from the table in her wheelchair.
White gloves headed out the door with the gentleman in quick succession.
Esther and her fellow pink lady stopped just before the door and faced Dorthy. Esther raised her hand as if she was timidly trying to interject something into a conversation, even though no one was talking. Finally she managed to get the words in her head lined up with her mouth, “I think Pearl and I should work together.”
“Yes I think so too.” Dorthy agreed. “Courage is thicker when shared between friends.” she motioned to me to push forward to the room.
“Let’s have a sleep over.” Esther said to Pearl.
“I’ll bring the Elvis records.” Pearl said quickly.
Esther giggled as if she had been transported back to her teenage youth, “How will we ever be able to concentrate with Elvis the Pelvis playing in the background?”
“Your mother would be ashamed!” Pearl playfully swatted at corner of Esther’s jacket shoulder.
The two erupted in girlish giggles and linked arms as the walked together towards the elevator.
I smiled as I watched them walk away, I was secretly a little jealous. I hope I have a friend that close when I’m their age. Someone to be silly with, to let my guard down completely and not be judged.
