Mysteries on the Side

Patricia reached over and drank some tea, she held the warm cup in her hand. “You know, I’m not sure. But I do know he was battling lung cancer, had COPD, and was on round the clock oxygen. I just supposed it had something to do with that, assuming some man hadn’t done something.”
“Like take him off his oxygen?” Gertrude fished.
“Or turn it off.” Patricia looked back up from her cup at Gertrude. “I heard someone say when they found him, the machine was off. Now why would that happen? Do you think he did it? Maybe he was tired of what his life had become. He used to do Parasailing or something during his midlife crisis. Maybe he missed it.”
Gertrude shook her head, “You never know around here, what people are thinking, what people are feeling. Behind closed doors, when they take off their mask.” she took a sip of tea and set the cup down on the table. “I wonder what happened to Gus. That really was a surprise to me.”
“Pfft-ha” Patricia agreed as she also set her cup down. “No one saw that coming. Complete Renal Failure. I never knew he had a problem with his kidneys, never saw a dialysis catheter. As a matter of fact, I wasn’t aware he was even on any medications. And you know me, I always like to talk medications. You just never know what you need to ask your doctor about.”
Gertrude let the surprise embrace her face instead of hiding it as she normally would. “No, I never knew.”
Patricia shook her head, “It doesn’t seem right to me. But also, I guess, sometimes those with the most laughter are the best at hiding things. How many comedians out there die, and then after the autopsy you find out they were extremely ill that whole time and no one knew.”
Gertrude glanced up at the houseplants, “You should be careful too Patricia. I wouldn’t want to hear about anything happening to you.”
Patricia laughed, “Oh you’ll never have to worry about that. I see the doctor all the time.”
‘More like you have them on speed dial’, Gertrude thought to herself and then glanced down at her watch. “Oh look at the time!” she stood up and grabbed her tea. “I’m so sorry to have to cut this visit short, but I have another appointment.”
“Oh of course,” Patricia waved her off to excuse her. “It was really nice of you to stop by and check on me. Would you do me a favor, lock the door on your way out.”
Gertrude halted her movements and turned back to Patricia, “You lock your doors now?”
Patricia drank the last of her tea and the looked over to reply, “It’s better to be safe.”
Gertrude switched the lock on the door and walked out, listening to make sure of the lock click when the door shut. She walked down towards the nurses station, depending on who was on duty she might find out something on Jeremy.
Every hallway in the Alpine side is set up like a mini city, the hallways are roads and the rooms are buildings. Each wing has three blocks, within each block is eight rooms, four on either side. That means on East wing there is a total of twenty four rooms, and West wing also has twenty four rooms.
